Hello!   Welcome to my website!

This is a place where I am not trying to sell you any product or service, just a place where you can rest for a while and read the poem DESIDERATA, for which I paid a small fortune for the right to be able to use on my yacht’s stationery almost twenty years ago.
When the velvet revolution of 1989 occurred in my homeland, I returned to the Czech Republic from which I had escaped with my parents and sister many years earlier, and after a couple of years of not even visiting the US, and therefore not getting any use out of my boat whatsoever, I eventually sold the DESIDERATA.
You might say I traded in the yacht for my wife and now two wonderful kids, and I think it was a good deal!
Still, I miss the boat sometimes, but only sometimes. I have many great memories of the sloop which are nice to remember, but I also have plenty of memories of the maiden voyage in 1982-1983 from the Gulfstar factory in St.Petersburg in Florida through the Panama Canal to Los Angeles which are not so pleasant and some give me fright to this day. The maiden voyage lasted six months and along the way I and my crew visited all the Club Med resorts along the way and explored the Sea Of Cortez inside Mexico’s Baja California. We also faced the crew of a Cuban naval ship that stopped us offshore from Havana for allegedly hugging the coast of Cuba too close during the US joint naval operations in the area. Little did we know that the very next day the US would be liberating an island from the Cubans.
We also managed to snag another ship’s anchor rope in Cancun and had to haul out in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, to change engine mounts, the coupler, propeller, etc. Not to mention the occasions that the engine stopped because of clogged fuel filters when we were out in the middle of nowhere (repeatedly) and the relentless fear of pirates, corrupt central American officials, Montezuma’s revenge, bad weather, personal conflicts among the crewmembers, etc.
All in all, I don’t regret having bought the boat and making the trip, but I would not do it again, once was enough.
I was going to edit the video footage of the trip and make a film of the trip, but because of all the excitement along the way I had to take over helmsmanship and become the captain of my ship and could no longer devote enough time to make my film in a way that would look professional. I was just a few years out of UCLA’s Motion Picture and Television department, and USC’s School of Law, and the world was my oyster. Now I live mostly in Prague, for the time being.
I may not have the sailboat anymore, but I still own the right to use the poem DESIDERATA on my stationery.
I like the poem, it puts me in a good mood. Take care, and enjoy life. With my best regards from Prague, Milan Vacek

Desiderata

A poem for a way of life
Max Ehrmann
Go placidly amid the noise & haste, & remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly & clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull & the ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud & aggressive persons, they are vexatious to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter;
for always there will be greater & lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery. But let not this blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity & disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue & loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees & the stars; you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors & aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery & broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Desiderata, which is usually said to have been copied from an inscription ”found in Old Saint Paul’s Church, Baltimore; dated 1692,” was actually written by an Indiana poet named Max Ehrmann and registered with the Copyright Office of the Library of Congress early in 1927. Copyright was renewed after the author’s death by his widow, and the work is still protected by United States Copyright Law. Thus, this popular philosophical statement is neither anonymous nor ancient, having both an author and a fairly recent date. Nonetheless, what it says remains timeless and reserves for its author a niche in that poetical pantheon to which belong those writers who have, at least once, seen an eternal truth clear.

Překlad do Češtiny  /  Czech Language Translation:

DESIDERATA
MAX EHRMANN

Jdi klidně uprostřed rozruchu a spěchu
a vzpomeň si, jaký mír může být v tichu.

Pokud je to možné bez ztráty tváře, vycházej dobře se všemi lidmi.
Říkej svou pravdu tiše a jasně a naslouchej ostatním,

Přijímej klidně, co ti radí léta, a až přijde čas,

Pavla v Baltimore,
ve skutečnosti jej napsal v roce 1927 americký spisovatel, evangelista
a právník Max Ehrmann.
